Kombucha 1

Well folks, I think I did it again.  FAILED, that is.  Any ideas?  This doesn't look like normal mold...?  Is there anything that looks like this that is OK?  I'm so loathe to chuck my first batch!   So sad! I was sooo excited...

No... do toss it... it's ok... that is how babies look. It will pull itself together... did you use the starter.. it may be ok...wait awhile... a little extra time.. the scoby has been sleeping in the fridge and it is waking up now... this is interesting.. go to my website and look at the ugly baby scobys there... it is hard to grow a mold if you use kombucha tea or some vinegar as starter... and what you have there is ok so far... put up some more pictures in a couple of days... and you have a very nice blog here... Healthy Cooking... I cooked alot at a Sivanada yoga ashram in Val Morin Canada years ago... put up more pictures in a day or two and let me know when they get up and look at the pictures at my website... thanks for mentioning me and contacting me... your bacteriapimp...

.... a little more ... those colors you see prove there is action going on.. there is a lot of activity going on... there is CO2 being produced and yeast stuff is happening.. that is why there are so many bubbles... see if you can go to wikpedia and look up kombucha there... they have a picture of mold there ... mold will look like a bread mold without much action happening.. you have a lot of action and that is good.. a bad sign would be your momma culture falling to the bottom and turning black which your momma isn't doing.. I predict it will be just fine... which is also very interesting

Erin - it looks fine to me. SCOBYs can look funky but they're generally fine. You only have to worry if it's green and/or hairy.

:-D

Leave it be and let it do its thing.

No.. I meant to say don't toss it..you can even taste it... it won't kill you.. take a straw and stick it in a little and put your finger in it.. because the momma was in the fridge it needed extra time to do its thing but try it

Me? Well....I have a day job selling travel to beautiful far away lands, and I love to travel - my job sort of supports & feeds the 'travel monster' inside me. But my other inner monster is: food in all it's facets. I have a 13 yr old DS from a previous life, and married the lovely JoeBacon a three years ago! I finally became a home-owner at that point, we did a huge addition/re-model right away to make the house a bit bigger & I got a wonderful new kitchen out of the deal! I've gone thru Culinary School twice (mostly for fun) 'cuz I love to cook! And thru reading/doing the Maker's Diet 2 years ago, became aware of Sally Fallon, Weston Price, etc...and now after about 9 months of exploring their world, I'm trying to really make it all part of mine. I've had some things turn out great & others have been miserable failures, but I'm learning a LOT (mostly from my fellow NT Bloggers)!! Now I'm enjoying my yard, garden, sprouting, baking bread, brewing Kombucha, using raw milk, making Kefir & Yogurt & just trying to find small ways to make yummy food better for us.
